The name Mavrovo means Black Field and was given to the area after a great battle in the distant past.

This field after the construction of the dam in 1953 was flooded & filled with the artificial lake of Mavrovo.

During the Second world war, these 4 villages (Mavrovo, Mavrovi Anovi, Leunovo and Nikiforovo), as well as many others, were totally burned down by the Albanian balists, who were an Axis alies, as a revenge of the creation of the Mavrovo Partisan Detachment.

The region gave many human victims for the liberation of Macedonia during the Second World War. Most valuable is Cede Filipovski - Dame from Nikiforovo village.
